Synopsis

During the 2008-09 Taking Chances Tour, Dion played concerts in 5 continents, 25 countries and 93 cities. Her first tour in 9 years was wildly successful, selling over 3 million tickets.[4]

A small team did 800 hours of filming from South Africa to Omaha. The photo director Jean-François Perrault captured many great images of Dion all around the world. Intercutting concert performances of Dion's biggest hits with behind the scenes footage, the documentary depicts singer's life during the Taking Chances Tour, giving fans "the unique opportunity to follow Celine everywhere, on stage, backstage, enjoying free time with her family; this movie will show it all".[5]

Sony's president of worldwide distribution, Rory Bruer said of the film: "For fans, this is a chance to both hear an artist in a theater setting with great sound, as well as take a look inside their lives. It isn't like seeing the person live, but it does add that huge element of intimacy".[2]

"This was an amazing world tour, but there's a lot more than just concert footage on this film. I let the cameras follow me everywhere. There are a lot of ups and downs, and it's very personal...and it's definitely the most intimate journey that I've ever shared with my fans", said Dion.[4]

Tickets went on sale on January 22, 2010. They could be purchased through Thehotticket.net/celinedion.[8]

Sony Pictures confirmed the release of Celine: Through the Eyes of the World in movie theatres in Australia for one week only (February 18–24).[9][10]

Promotion

Dion sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss her upcoming movie release Celine: Through the Eyes of the World. The Oprah Winfrey Show aired on February 10, 2010.[11]

The Hot Ticket was giving a chance to attend free sneak peek screenings in a variety of U.S. cities on February 10–11, 2010.[12]

Céline Dion also promoted her film on Larry King Live on February 15, 2010,[13] and attended the Miami premiere of the movie on February 16, 2010.[14]

Critical response

The film received positive reviews from film critics. Elysa Gardner of USA Today gave the movie 3 stars out of 4. She stated that "Celine Dion may be responsible for some of the smoothest, most syrupy pop recordings in recent decades, but in concert, she is a pit bull."[15] Lauren Carter from Boston Herald gave the film A-. According to her "the film succeeds because it lets us in on Celine the person as much as Celine the performer."[16]

Richard Ouzounian of Toronto Star gave the film 3.5 out of 4 stars and said that "it's more than just a collection of the Quebec singer's greatest hits performed in concert, although there's enough high-energy, nicely shot musical numbers to gladden the heart of any Dionista." Also "what makes this a real surprise and something that should strike a chord with those who aren't necessarily Dion fans, is that it also takes you inside: inside the universe of a superstar tour as it careens around the world, as well as inside the mind, heart and – in one unforgettable scene – even the larynx of Dion." In the end, "if you like Dion, the singer, then you will love Celine: Through the Eyes of the World. But even if you don't, you can't help but be impressed by this fascinating portrait of a superstar trying very hard to keep her feet on earth while her career keeps soaring ever upward."[17]

Michelle Coude-Lord from Toronto Sun gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote that "the movie is a must-see." It "shows Celine as being human, and perfectly depicts the bond between her and Angelil. It connects the public with Dion’s words, successes, career heights and her superstardom." She also noted that "Dion’s goal was for her world to remain human, real and authentic. Mission accomplished."[18] John Griffin of The Gazette said that "fans die and go to pop heaven with Stéphane Laporte’s sympathetic and even candid documentary about our very own superstar’s world tour in 2008-09. Non-fans discover her real appeal in Céline: Through the Eyes of the World." He gave the film 3 out of 5 stars.[19]

Linda Cook of Quad-City Times gave the film 3 out of 4 stars and said that she "was pleasantly surprised when she realized the movie had her hooked about 15 minutes into the film". She also said that "it’s mesmerizing to see audiences all over the world singing along in French and/or English, and to see the moment when she was presented with the Legion of Honour medal." She "enjoyed watching as Celine and her family became tourists in the countries she visited, whether she was taking in the sounds and sights of Africa or Australia. Above all, it’s fascinating to watch her music unite the world as audiences from Dubai and Amsterdam sing familiar lyrics".[20]

Sara Schieron from Boxoffice stated that "in sum, what you see is a woman and a family that handle celebrity with a unique grace." She also said that the "box office will, no doubt, confirm demand for the movie" and gave it 3 stars out of 5.[21]

According to The Globe and Mail "you have to admit Dion is the James Brown of her generation - the hardest working woman in showbusiness". Los Angeles Times wrote that "rather than capturing a restless star pushing at her own boundaries, Through the Eyes of the World finds Dion sitting pretty, on top of the world and happy to stay there". MSNBC said that the movie "does more than highlight her performances during her last world tour, it also allows fans rare glimpses of her offstage life. The documentary shows Dion as goofy jokester, a doting mother, a tender wife, a wide-eyed tourist, a devoted daughter and more. The cameras tag along for intimate moments the superstar is happy to share with fans." The Buffalo News stated that the film "shows Celine as being human, and perfectly depicts the bond between her and Angelil. It connects the public with Dion's words, successes, career heights and her superstardom."[22]

DVD / Blu-ray Disc release

Columbia Records released Celine: Through the Eyes of the World on DVD and Blu-ray Disc between April 29 and May 14, 2010.[25][26][27][28][29][30] The documentary includes subtitles in different languages and lasts 3 hours, which is longer than the cinema version.[31]

They also released the Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert on DVD/CD, which was recorded in Boston in mid-August 2008. A French concert, called Tournée mondiale taking chances: le spectacle, recorded in Montreal two weeks later, was also released at the same time in French speaking countries.[3][32][33][34][35][36][37][38]

A special limited edition deluxe two-DVD set, featuring both Celine: Through the Eyes of the World and Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert and a 52 page booklet and fold-out souvenir postcards is also available.[39]

QVC is offering the movie Celine: Through the Eyes of the World with a bonus CD, containing songs which weren't included on the Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert CD: "I'm Alive", "Fade Away", "Pour que tu m'aimes encore", "We Will Rock You" and "The Show Must Go On".[40]

Chart success

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Dion's three new DVD releases debuted at the top three on the Music Video Chart in Canada. Celine: Through the Eyes of the World entered at number-one, selling 69,000 copies. Sales of this DVD achieved the second highest one week total for a music DVD, behind Dion's 2007 release, Live in Las Vegas: A New Day.... The concert DVD/CD Tournée mondiale taking chances: le spectacle entered the chart at number-two, selling 31,000 copies, which was then followed by the English version, Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert at number-three with 7,700 copies sold. This marked only second time since 2004 that an artist has held the top three positions on the chart.[41][42] After five weeks, Tournée mondiale taking chances: le spectacle was still number 1 in Canada, selling 112,829 copies, and all 3 DVDs were in the top 5 of the chart.[43] In May 2010, all three releases were certified by the Canadian Recording Industry Association: Celine: Through the Eyes of the World 2x diamond (200,000), Tournée mondiale taking chances: le spectacle diamond (100,000), and Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert 4x platinum (40,000).[44] This should make Celine: Through the Eyes of the World, one of the fastest selling double diamond certification by a Canadian artist.[45]

Céline Dion entered the Billboard Top DVD Music Video chart at number-one and number-two with Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert and Celine: Through the Eyes of the World, respectively. Dion is the first artist other than Bill and Gloria Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band to manage a double-debut in the chart's two top spots.[46] Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert has sold 26,000 copies in the first week and would have ranked number fourteen on the Billboard 200 if DVDs were charted. Celine: Through the Eyes of the World has sold 15,000 copies in the debut week.[47] Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert was certified platinum (100,000 copies) by the RIAA, and Celine: Through the Eyes of the World was certified gold (50,000 copies).[48] On the Billboard Year-end Top Music Video chart of 2010, Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert reached numer 10, and Celine: Through the Eyes of the World peaked at number 19.[49] In the United States, the videos have sold 76,000 and 50,000 copies respectively.[50]

Celine: Through the Eyes of the World debuted inside top 10 of the music DVD charts around the world, including number 1 the UK, Canada and Belgium. The DVD was certified Platinum in France and Gold in Australia.

After 23 weeks on the chart in Belgium Wallonia, Celine: Through the Eyes of the World became the 9th best-selling DVD of the year 2010.[51] In Belgium Flandres, the DVD spent 22 weeks on the chart and became the 11th best-selling DVD of 2010.[52]
